"I only wonder if your little deception plays out as a comedy or a tragedy."
"Is there any difference?"As a card-carrying member of the Michael Shannon fan club, I thought I'd been keeping my eye out for A Little White Lie's release, but I was nevertheless surprised when it quietly made its way onto Hulu without my noticing this past weekend. Terrible poster notwithstanding, the comedy seems to be a riff on Being There for novelists, with Shannon's Manhattan apartment handyman Shriver (name chosen as an evident linguistic nod) deciding to go along with a university writing workshop's belief that he is in fact C.R. Shriver, the Pynchon-esque author who penned a single acclaimed book (Goat Time, obviously) before…

Michael Shannon tries playing Shriver,
Wanting to feel more alive or,
At least have a laugh,
Until Zach Braff,
Calls him a lying conniver. -

Tonally inconsistent in a way that would make Rian Johnson blush.
And too long.
But also charming in a 90s indie kind of way, ya know?
Michael Shannon is an absolute monster of an actor, really going to town with his unravelling David Foster Wallace meets JD Salinger by way of Tyler Durdin character, elevating every word the material.
With the murderers row of B-/C+'s you know and maybe love, who all seem to be having a good time. Happy to have the work.
M.Emmet Walsh doing some of his late period "Sit and Act".
No complaints. And it's nicely shot in real, practical places including the hotel the cast lived in, I assume, and it doesn't look like cheap…

A Little White Lie is a supposed comedy but I didn’t laugh, so I’ll just rate it as a drama. The basic premise is intriguing but not wholly original. Michael Shannon plays a maintenance man that gets mistaken for a reclusive famous writer who is invited to a college literary festival. As a lark he accepts the invitation and immediately regrets it. He is suddenly thrust into a world beyond his capabilities or so it seems.
The cast is pretty top notch which includes the aforementioned Michael Shannon, Kate Hudson, Don Johnson, M. Emmet Walsh, Wendie Malick, Jimmi Simpson, Zach Braff, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Randolph is the standout in the supporting cast, you may remember her from her great…

I'm glad I watched this on my own because I would have felt obligated to apologize to anyone I suggested watching it with. Surely, Michael Shannon is above something that with a smaller casting budget (and no F-bombs) would feel completely at home on cable television (e.g. Hallmark, not HBO). I guess that's why this just recently turned up on Hulu with zero fanfare and didn't turn up in the search results until nearly the whole title was typed out.
I think a good rule of thumb is that if your movie involves academia and literature, then it should have at least a modicum of intellectual value. The most creative this gets is having Shannon -- literally -- talk to…

So as I've said before I won't rate movies I've worked on because it's just such a different experience watching movies I've worked on.
This one was a wild one.
So my understanding was they shot a lot of this before the pandemic, then shut down during the pandemic then when shoots were coming back, they only had a week left.
My friend Pryde had texted me sending me a screenshot of a Craigslist Ad (yeah Craigslist!) saying that he just got hired for this as a Production Assistant and told them about me and wanted to see if I could do it. I was a little hesitant at first because it was Craigslist but since Pryde was gonna be… -

A truly baffling movie. I guess it was supposed to be a comedy but I didn’t really laugh that much, but then it also doesn’t really seem to try and be a comedy either. But then it’s not really much of a drama either. I honestly don’t know what this was supposed to be. The story was very disjointed and this didn’t seem to know what it was trying to do or be at all. Dialogue wasn’t good, writing was all over the place, I don’t know what tone this was going for, it’s a real confusing mess. There’s like 5 different plots going on it seems (including a missing person case plot that goes absolutely nowhere???) and there’s far…
